Today we learned something pretty crucial in the world of media: editing.  Anybody who plans to be involved with anything in shooting must have some knowledge of editing, even on-air talent.  This past semester, I had tv/radio newswriting class and the professor said that in these days and times, an on-air person must know how to shoot and edit their own work.  Since then, learning to edit has been pretty high on my list.  We were shown how to splice together different scenes and make them a fluid story; I think I did pretty well.  I’m not really the aesthetic type, as far as “seeing” a scene or having a “big picture” vision of how it should look.  I mainly plan to get on the camera or get on the mic and talk sports.  However, I kind of surprised myself today.  Not only did I splice together scenes in editing, but I also came up with a lot of scene/camera shot ideas when discussing how the HS interns were going to construct their scenes.  Maybe I have it in me to be a behind-the-scenes player after all…….naaaaaah.  On an ending note, being around HS kids makes me feel so old.  Has it really been 10 years since I’ve graduated HS?  Wow…….

So after fretting for bit, and thinking that I was going to have to lay around and be a bum all summer, yours truly was finally able to get a summer internship pretty late in the game (shout out to the BCTVR yahoo group). I’m in my second week at BCAT and everything’s been good so far. I’ve mainly been involved in setting up for shoots; plugging in cables, setting up cameras, testing microphones, etc. However, for one shoot (hi Irma), I was able to actually be one of the guys controlling the camera. Shots I was shooting was actually making it on TV; got my name on the credits and errthing. Things are looking up.

Things got even better today when I met the host for In the Zone, a sports show that comes on BCAT. I want to get involved in sports broadcasting so meeting him was a big boost. Being involved with shoots for this particular show will help me take steps towards my goal. He said to feel free to bounce ideas off of him. Hey, any experience is good experience. Besides Mr. Bellamy, the aforementioned host, I’ve met a lot of other great people: Jonathan Lief, who I had my initial interview with; Lira & Carlos, who’ve pretty much been my “handlers” so far, guiding me through this terrain; Jasmine & Shameeka, fellow interns; Julian, who’s helped me tremendously on shoots; and many, many others. Everyone’s had a hand in helping me so far, something I probably wouldn’t have got interning at one of the big networks.

By the time I’m done here at the end of summer, I expect to have a large amount of knowledge on the inner-workings of television shoots. I have two production classes coming up in fall semester, so hopefully this internship will give me a leg up and get me a couple of A’s.
