BCAT Workshops

As part of BCAT’s internship program, interns are given the opportunity to assist in the studio shoots of community producers and to attend the workshops that BCAT’s Center for Media Education hold on a quarterly basis.

The schedule of classes for Summer 2008 are:

Basic Television Studio Workshop

Number of class meetings per section: Eight (8) 3-hour weekday class meetings OR four (4) 6-hour weekend class meetings
Section 1: Mon. & Wed., July 14 – Aug 6, 2 – 5pm
Section 2: Mon. & Wed., July 14 – Aug 6, 6 – 9pm
Section 3: Mon. & Wed., Sept 8 – Oct 1, 2 – 5pm
Section 4: Mon. & Wed., Sept 8 – Oct 1, 6 – 9pm
PRE-REQUISITE: Orientation
COST: $98

You’ll learn how to use studio cameras, microphones, and all the basic equipment needed to produce your own TV studio show. Successful completion leads to becoming a BCAT Certified Producer, which gives you free access to use BCAT’s TV studio to produce your BFS TV Show.

Basic Field Production/Non-Linear Editing Workshop

Number of class meetings per section: Eight (8) 3-hour weekday class meetings OR four (4) 6-hour weekend class meetings
Section 1: Tues. & Thurs., July 15 – Aug 7, 2 – 5pm
Section 2: Tues. & Thurs., July 15 – Aug 7, 6 – 9pm
Section 3: Sat., July 13 – Aug. 9, 6 – 9pm
Section 4: Tues. & Thurs., Sept 9 – Oct 2, 2 – 5pm
Section 5: Tues. & Thurs., Sept 9 – Oct 2, 6 – 9pm

In one half of the class you’ll learn to operate a digital video camera, tripod, sound equipment and portable light kits to record your footage. The other half of the class covers the basics of non-linear editing with AvidXpress Pro. Successful completion leads to becoming a BCAT Certified Producer, which gives you free access to using BCAT’s video equipment and editing facilities to produce your BFS TV show.
Limited to 12 students

Note: Students without basic computer skills must take the Computer Literacy course in order to successfully complete this production workshop.

Computer Literacy (5 hours)

Number of class meetings per section: 2
Section 1: Tue., July 8, 6pm – 9pm & Thu., July 10, 6pm – 8pm
PRE-REQUISITE: Orientation
COST: $20

This hands-on workshop demystifies the techno-babble associated with computers. During the first three hours, students will learn the basics on how to navigate computer software; create files and folders; and how to input, process, and output information. At the second session, you’ll get to practice what you’ve learned during a 2-hour lab session.
Limited to 10 students

Video Blogging 101 (2 hours)

Number of class meetings per section: One (1) 3-hour class meeting
Section 1: Tues., August 20, 6-8pm
Section 2: Wed., September 24, 6-8pm
PRE-REQUISITE: Orientation
COST: $10

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to develop your own web log – from creating a blog account to compressing video for upload to the web. Please bring a short video clip (under 5 minutes) on a CD or one will be provided.
Limited to 10 students.

Effects & Graphics with Avid Xpress Pro (12 hours)

NUMBER OF SESSIONS: Four (4) 3-hour sessions
Section 1: Tues. & Thurs., Aug 12 – Aug 21, 6 – 9pm
PRE-REQUISITE: Completion of BCAT Basic Field/Non-Linear Editing Workshop
COST: $60

An intermediate non-linear editing workshop using Avid Xpress Pro, this class covers digital effects like transitions and superimpositions, titling, and the incorporation of graphic elements.
Limited to 6 students.

Interviewing Tips & Techniques (4 hours)

Number of class meetings per section: Two (2) 2-hour class meetings
Section 1: Tuesday, Sept 16 & Thursday, Sept 18, 6 – 8pm
PRE-REQUISITE: Orientation
COST: $30 or $20 for BCAT Certified Producers

Learn techniques to conduct effective and revealing interviews, including research methods; establishing trust with interview subjects; asking effective questions; evaluating acoustics; and choosing the right microphone.
Limited to 10 students.

CME Media Literacy Series (2 hours)

EMERGING WEB TECHNOLOGIES
Number of sessions: One (1) 2-hour sessions
Section 1: Friday, Sept 26 from 6 – 8pm
Open to Public. No Orientation required.
COST:Free
